A snack by the river

Description

The northern landscape is cobbled with stout conical bone trees of varying sizes. Unlike their flatter equatorial relatives who recieve light from directly above, plants on this high lattitude must grow upwards in order to absorb oncoming sunlight. Like tile tops, their bodies are composed of a thin central trunk and many off-shooting butresses over which the cap grows. This cap is a matted curtain of interwoven grass-like fibers, growing down from tubular processes along the trunk. This matrix of thick organic carpeting is home to many small organisms.
In a riverside clearing, a hermaphroditic 'mother' sits comfortably while she feeds on another river pumpfish. Her single cub waits impatiently for a helping of pre-shredded meat.
Their mouths are located on the inner surface of each of their mandibles. The mandibles are powerful, yet dextrous, and are used to grab and slice up prey during feeding. Each mouth has a long, prehensile tongue with which the animals pulls and grabs food into the gullet. Inside the 'neck' there is a radula-coated 'crop' in which the chunks of food are processed. From here the food is either swallowed and passed along to the ring-intestine, or regurgitated for the young. The dexterous tongue can curl into a tube, pumping the semi-liquid mixture to the waiting baby's scooping mouths. Because they possess two mouths, the mother can feed her baby whilst simultaneously feeding herself.
The fresh remains of the first pump-fish have already attracted a few small scavengers. A couple of airborne blas guard their find as many small setae-winged disks dart about, waiting for an opportunity to grab a bite. The blas cannot eat solid food, and must digest it externally. The flying disks will scrape the remaining gristle off the black bones, which the scavenging plants cannot break down.
